How to install the Dark Alex 3.30 OE-A
PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE PERFORMED AT YOUR OWN RISK. NEITHER THIS WEB SITE NOR THE WRITERS TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY SHOULD YOU HURT YOUR PSP, YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR DOG, YOUR CAT OR YOUR TOILET.
This document assumes you know how to connect your PSP to your computer to access the Memory Stick, and can perform basic file commands on your own.
Requirements:
- Sony PSP with battery charged at least 75%.
- Memory Stick Duo (Recommended 1GB and above)
The first step to running your custom made Playstation games on your PSP involves getting the 3.30 OE-A Rev A (stands for Open Edition).
Most of this software can be found on Dark Alex's site, who is the creator of much of the software used here. Please give him your thanks if you use his software!

For now, just download the 3.30 OE-A.

Start with 1.5 Firmware
The first step is to have a PSP that is running on the 1.5 version of the PSP firmware. You can check for this by going into the System "System Settings" on your PSP, then System Information.
Important note: There is a version of the PSP's motherboard known as TA-082, which, as far I understand, will not work under this situation. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MESS WITH YOUR PSP IF YOU HAVE THIS VERSION! For more information, see The PSP-TA082 guide.
Assuming that you are running a PSP with the 1.5 firmware, proceed.
What do I do if I don't have the 1.5 Firmware?
Depends. If you know what you're doing, and you've already installed the Dark Alex 2.71 Special Edition or above (known as 2.71 SE) firmware, then you can proceed with the instructions below.
If you are running Firmware 2.0 or 2.71, there are downgraders you can use. The DarK AleX PSP Developer Web site has a 2.71 downgrader (as well as a downgrader for those running the TA-082 motherboard), so you can get to 1.5 firmware. If you are using 2.0, there are downgraders out there - but it's really easier to upgrade to 2.71 and downgrade from there.
If you are running anything between 2.71 and 1.5, as I mentioned above, I would simply upgrade to 2.71, then downgrade to 1.5.
Next step: Installing the 3.30 OE-A firmware.
Upgrade to 3.30 OE-A
- First, download the official Sony PSP 1.50 Firmware and 3.30 Firmware, available here:
PSP 1.50 Firmware
3.30 Firmware - Rename the 1.50 Firmware to 150.PBP, and the 3.30 firmware to 330.PBP.
- Download the 3.30 Open Edition A from the Dark Alex Website. Extract the files to the directory of your choice.
- Copy the files 150.PBP and 330.PBP to the directory called oeupdmaker.
- Copy the directories 330oeflasher, 330oeflasher%, oeupdmaker, oeupdmaker% to your PSP under the /PSP/GAME/ directory, so you should see this:
- Go into your Game on your PSP menu, select Memory Card, and run 3.30 OE-A Update Maker - this is the program in your oeupdmaker folder. This will extract files from the 1.50 and 3.30 firmware to create the new custom firmware.
- Reconnect your PSP to your computer. In the oeupdmaker on your PSP is a new file titled DATA.DXAR. Copy this file to the 330oeflasher directory.
- THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL THIS FIRMWARE, THEN REMOVE ALL OF THE FILES YOU JUST PUT ONTO YOUR PSP AND GO DO SOMETHING ELSE.
- Run the program on your PSP called 3.30 OE-A Firmware Install. If you really, really want to do this, press X. Otherwise, press the right should button to escape. I'd go ahead and press X. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PSP DURING THIS TIME! IF YOU DO, YOU ARE ROYALLY SCREWED!
- Wait - when it's done, your PSP will reboot, and you'll have your shiny new 3.30 OE-A firmware!
FAQ
Can I run current PSP games using the 3.30 OE-A firmware?
So far, the answer is yes - the most recent game I've actually seen in the wild is a game requiring 2.81 firmware, and that runs just fine. Everything up to games requiring Sony Firmware 3.30 should work without a hitch. Future games, of course, may require that you upgrade to some level beyond 3.30, but we'll tackle that later.
Can I downgrade back to an official Sony Firmware later?
Yes - the instructions are included in the 3.30 OE-A download. It requires you take these steps:
- Have a copy of the 1.50 firmware available. Rename it UPDATE.PBP and place it in the RECOVERY folder that was included with the 3.10 OE-A download.
- Place the RECOVERY folder into the directory /PSP/GAME/ on your PSP.
- Turn off your PSP, then turn is back on again while holding the Right Shoulder Trigger button. This will put it into Recovery mode.
- From the Recovery menu, run the Recovery software (it will prompt you to run the program in /PSP/GAME/RECOVERY).
- Follow the instructions, and you'll be back to Firmware 1.50. Your PSP will reset its settings back to factory default, so you'll have to set up your WI-FI and such, but it should work just fine.
